MTB Trail Maintenance Technician


Reports to: WIKI Board Director


Classification: Part Time, June through August, approximately 25 hours per week


About the Friends of Willow River and Kinnickinnic State Parks, Inc.:  The Friends of Willow River and Kinnickinnic State Parks, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to enhance the natural environment at the parks and engage visitors through recreation, education, and conservation.


Position Summary

The Trail Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining safe, rideable, and aesthetically consistent mountain bike trails. This position focuses on vegetation management, including weed whipping and removal of overgrowth that encroaches on trail corridors. The role requires use of both power and hand tools and involves extensive walking over varied terrain while carrying equipment.  The days/timing of hours to be worked can be flexible.  Locations to include Willow River State Park and Kinnickinnic State Park as needed.


Key Responsibilities

Operate weed whip, hedge trimmers and other power equipment (excluding chain saws) to remove vegetation along designated trail corridors

Use hand tools (loppers, hand saws, pruners, etc.) to clear brush and trim overhanging growth

Maintain established trail width and sightlines in accordance with trail standards

Identify and address encroachment, low-hanging branches, and vegetation impacting rider safety

Transport and safely handle tools and equipment across long distances on uneven terrain

Perform routine inspection and basic maintenance of tools and equipment

Follow all safety protocols and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)

Report trail hazards, erosion issues, or maintenance needs beyond vegetation management


Qualifications

Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain while carrying tools and equipment

Experience operating weed whips and other landscaping or trail maintenance equipment preferred

Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain consistent trail standards

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions

Basic mechanical aptitude for tool care and maintenance

18 years or older

Have a vehicle, valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Have not had three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years

Have no OWI/DUI violations within the past year


Physical Requirements

Frequent walking and hiking on natural terrain and/or biking pulling a small trailer

Ability to lift and carry 25–50 pounds

Repetitive motion involving trimming and cutting

Ability to bend, kneel, and work in brush-dense environments


Work Environment

Outdoor setting in wooded and natural areas

Exposure to heat, humidity, insects, and uneven ground

Seasonal or variable schedule (if applicable)


Hours

Expect an average of 25 hours per week. Hours will flex with the weather — more rain means more growth and more trimming, which may increase weekly hours during peak growing periods.


Compensation

Hourly wage $17 per hour
