The WIKI Mountain Bike Club was formed to oversee the development and construction of over 30 miles of mountain bike, natural surface trails in Willow River and Kinnickinnic State Parks.
WIKI is part of the Friends of Willow River and Kinnickinnic State Parks, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation organized to support and assist the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with environmental, interpretive, scientific, historical, recreational, and educational activities at Willow River and Kinnickinnic State Parks.
The Club’s mission is to create trails that embody the three components of sustainability:
1. Environmental Sustainability – Will the trail provide for resource protection? This is the definition that is commonly used when referring to what does or does not provide for a sustainable trail.
2. Social Sustainability – This is frequently overlooked in the trail development process. Evidence of the failure to meet desired use rout comes (experiences and associated benefits) are everywhere: overcrowded trails, trails with little use, trail users who feel “pushed out” by other users, and unauthorized routes.
3. Economic Sustainability – Can the land manager and the community bear the long-term costs of maintaining a trail? If it provides a valuable experience, it is likely worth the investment.
By adhering to the principles and strategies established by the Bureau of Land Management and IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association) in their publication, “Guidelines for a Quality Trail Experience”, the Club will succeed in building some of the best mountain bike trails in the Midwest.
This type of development requires a significant amount of time and money and can only be accomplished with the support of the community. Please consider being part of something great by becoming a WIKI Mountain Bike Club member today.
